I am currently : Volunteer Service for ND56, and Sun City Palm Desert. My Comments : WE LIVE AT 78402 Silver Sage Dr.; Palm Desert, CA 92211-1348. TEL and/or FAX: 1-760-772-6056. Warmest greeting to all the Classmates. I hope you enjoy the Class WebPage for your information and communications. Webmaster Dick Yeager comes up with great ideas to make it more pleasurable with fascinating graphics and layout. I provide the written word and photos from many of you as well as newspaper and internet sources... mostly stuff you won't find in the local paper. It's been an extension of our ND Class of '56 NEWSLETTER , but the May 2011 issue was the final issue. This media and daily '56 Email will keep us "up" on communication... 70% of the Classmates are on the email list with us; wish everyone could be, but that's still a lot of friends to keep in touch. Your input is invited and welcome for posting on the WebPage; send it to me at the above e-mail address. We hope you will enjoy this WEB PAGE often. It IS updated daily.
Personally, Mary Ann and I moved from Sparks (Reno/Tahoe), NV March 25, 2003... sad to be away from our two growing grandsons in Sparks (and our daughter, Lisa, and her husband, Aaron -- both UW Badgers). Ben is a stud 16 (on Sept. 3) and a joy to hang out with; he worked all this summer at the concession stands of Sparks' Water Park. Nick was 15 on June 1, and is a good looking blonde teenager; born with anomalies, he had 34 stays (4-16 days) in the hospital, received over 200 IVs, and been subjected to 24 surgical procedures during his first 30 months of life. He's a fighter, and was getting better at avoiding "crashes" caused by cyclic vomiting triggered by abdominal migraine. He was continuing weight gain and development of his strength and agility. He hadn't had a "crash" since April 2007 -- until Nov. 2010. Since then, there have been some good days, and many very challenging with much hospital time and med changes. He was able to work through it and has been growing and gaining weight this summer of 2011. In 2008, he was selected the Miracle Children's Network "Champion Child" for the state of Nevada in 2008. Along with 78 other Champion Childrens from all over the States, he (and his family) were feted by CMN (including Founder Marie Osmond and family and many wonderful friends) for eight days in Orlando and Washington, DC where he met Pres. Bush at the White House. When you see the red balloons at Wal*Mart, Costco, IHOP, etc. chip in a $Buck and put Nicky's name on it. It's a spectacular help to save kids' lives. He and Ben are truly close brothers and enjoy each other immensely -- as well as their music lessons, golf, Tai KwonDo classes. Nick and Ben merited their second level Black Belt, and continue work toward third level Black Belt. Their Golden Retriever, C.C, is a solid family member, and keeps them all in good humor. Your prayers for Nicky's continued strength and good health are appreciated. Lisa is doing her Occupational Therapy work with her own OT pediatric group. Nick is in eighth grade in Middle School; Ben moved on to Reed High as a freshman and is showing potential as a distanced runner and a basketball guard.
Our son, Kevin (ND '80) and his family including wife, Karen, and granddaughters Kerry (15) and Kayla (12) live in Westlake Village, CA. Kerry has become an outstanding soccer player in high school and club competition. Their music talents are also impressive.
Aliso Viejo, CA is where son, Mark and Lisa have their family that includes son, Luke Mark, (7), and the very personable and beautiful Meghan Elizabeth who joined the family on Dec. 6, 2007. Luke calls every week with a new "finding". Mark is with GE Energy as a Manager of Human Resources.
Stop in to see us in Palm Desert; all the numbers are above. Health is providing challenges; 77 is a new challenge! Let us hear from you in the Guest Book

I am the daughter of Donald Hunihan Brennan, Class of '56. My father died,
suddenly, many years ago, in February of 1988. Dad's years at Norte Dame
were hugely important to him and indeed the rest of our family. Over the
years I have enjoyed reading the Class of '56 newsletter which still arrives
at my mother's house. We just today sent a donation to your organization in
Don's memory. If any of you recall my father and have stories to share, we
would love to hear from you. Dad was involved in ROTC, lettered in Tennis
and attended daily Mass. After college he went to service with the Air
Force.

My email is :
I moved to Hawaii in 1989 with my wife of 27 years, Elsha. After teaching in the Univ. of Hawaii School of Medicine since 1992, I retired from there September 1, 2007. Since then, I've been doing more work with the local Honolulu Catholic Diocese, giving workshops for priests. 2 weeks ago, I gave a talk to all 90 priests of the Diocese on "Keeping Your Spark and Preventing Burnout”. I have delivered over 40 presentations on that topic over the past 20 years. I feel I can be helpful, particularly in the implementation of the new 5-year Strategic Plan/ “Road Map” for the diocese.
I look forward to contributing to the mission of the Church. I feel strongly drawn to that.
AND - because of some recent tests, I decided I am going to have open heart surgery to get a coronary bypass June 23 (at 10:30 am). I will be in the hospital about 5-6 days and back to normal in 4-6 weeks (approximately August 4). I’m feeling very excited about my potential work with the Catholic Diocese, and I don’t want to risk short-circuiting that by having a heart attack or stroke. My intuition tells me that a bypass will enable me to have more energy, vitality and longevity.
So I am writing you to request that you keep me in your prayers and Masses, that I willl have successful heart surgery and recovery.
With much aloha,
Phil

My new e-mail is my daughter’s
I'm fully retired (August, 2005). Attended 178 straight home games (got personal letter from Charlie Weiss concerning this). My string ended at the Boston College game. This was due to a condition of spinal stenosis, which I had surgery on November 2, 2007. At this time, I am progressing nicely. Lots of hardware in my back, but I hope I can still swing a golf club come this spring. Next football season will be cutting down on games and hope to sell ND Van. Things have changed on campus including service to our Alumni….. tore down the University Club, changed parking privileges, and pep rally privileges. I know I will miss the continual weekends on campus, but as you get older your priorities change with age. Therefore, I am not taking the usher job at the stadium. Have even cut down Bonaventure basketball games, as they have been having their problems. Let’s hope the Irish turn it around next year as I am getting harassed here in Western New York. Hope all is well with you and that you have a very Merry Christmas and a healthy happy 2008… GO IRISH!!!!

My Comments : I frequently pull up our class page to see if there is something interesting. I would love to see what you have done since we all graduated. In my case I joined KPMG (then Peat Marwick, Mitchell & Co.) and spent 30 delightful years as the Managing Partner of offices in three different cities, including our South Bend office (which I opened). After that I ran for the US Congress in the 16th Congressional district of Texas (lost by a small margin) but there has still not been a Republican elected in that district. After that I was Chief Financial Officer of a major Southern bank, an owner of a green chile brand, (many of you won't even what that is), the Chief Financial Officer of a chain of hardware stores and a Business Broker. I am now retired in Albuquerque, NM and play golf four times a week. I raised eight children and now have nine grand children and one great grandchild. I hope to see your life experience soon.

My Comments : This may not be the proper forum for my thoughts, but it is the only way I know to express my gratitude to all who made our 50th Reunion the great success that it was. Many kudos and thanks to Bill, Mark, Gordon, Mike, John, Larry, and of course, Fr. Tom, for all their work and effort. And to all of those on campus who worked so hard to make our weekend so special--from the shuttle drivers to the waiters, the students to the faculty--what a job! Thanks so much.
For me the reunion was beyond all expectations. So many funny stories from the past, sprinkled with sincere and firm handshakes, and in some cases, tears. I think what I saw can be best described as just good old fashioned friendship and love among a bunch of guys we knew well and whom we miss greatly. And to me the highlight of the weekend, having the pleasure of seeing and hearing Fr. Ted not once, but twice while we were there. His homily and address at our dinner brought back such great memories for me, and coming through most clearly was his great faith. How blessed we are to have Fr. Ted as a role model and mentor.
Thanks for everything, and God bless
Jim Krebs

My email is :
My Comments : After reading the '56 newsletter and knowing how much my husband, Frank McCarthy, would have enjoyed being at his 50th reunion, I felt I should write so he could somehow be there and be remembered. I don't know if classmates, other than a few, know about Frank's years after ND. Frank and I married in 1962 and had 5 children, all of whom incidentally graduated from Notre Dame. He is also the proud grandfather of 15. For 33 years Frank served as President of the National Automobile Dealers Association, leading it to become truly one ot the nation's largest and most respected trade associations.
After his sudden death in February, 2001 of kidney cancer, just one year before his scheduled retirement. He received tributes, some of which I thought his friends might like to hear. The NADA Board of Directors renamed the headquarters building in McLean, VA the Frank E. McCarthy Building. Then in 2002, the automotive industry voted to have Frank inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame along with the likes of Mr. Ford , Mr. Chrysler, etc. If ever you are in Dearborn, MI or Greenfield Village ----
Early on, the NADA Charitable Foundation established the Frank E. McCarthy Memorial Fund which honors his memory and continues good works in his name, specifically providing skilled companion dogs, Labrador retrievers, for young persons with disabilities. Friends who know Frank's great love for children and labs understand how pleasing this would be to Frank and how comforting to all who love him and appreciate clear signs of what we know - that his spirit will indeed live forever.
I send best wishes, on my behalf and on Frank's too, to dear friends and to the entire Class of '56 for a great reunion. Frank, like you, treasured each moment on that wonderful campus with his friends.

My Comments : I retired two years ago as a judge, and am on the assigned judge program
operating out of the Administrative office of the courts, AOC. I have sat
in several counties in California. Right now, I am now sitting in the court
I retired from -- as that judge got sick and died in March this year. It
seems like Calif has a real shortage of judges, and so I am working too
much.
Other than that, Joan & I had a great trip to Ireland in July for 2 weeks
,and toured around on on own. We helped a priest friend celebrate his 60th
jubilee; and we enjoyed time with all our kids and grandkids (6) at the
central coast of California - Cayucos. Great time was had by all. Bad ending
as I had to return to work in August -- 40 hour weeks.
Sorry we will not make the Mini-Reunion this year, but will (if God's
willing) make the 50th. We will be in the midwest for Tenn, Navy and
Syracuse games visting Joan's relatives and our son Tom and his family.

I'm living in Redding, California, having retired from the Electric Power
Research Institute ( EPRI )in Palo Alto, as a Corporate Vice President, in
1993. I am still a consultant to the U.S DOE and a number of private
companies.
After retirement, I began inventing a new process to separate
CO2 from multi-component gas streams. We have a great team of technical
experts, including myself, Los Alamos National Lab, and Nexant, a subsidiary
of Bechtel. We have completed a 4.0 million dollar, first Phase Contract
from
DOE, and have been awarded a 6.0 million dollar Phase 2 contract. I have 7
patents on the process, both in the U.S. and in all major OECD countries. So
my retirement is perfect, as I keep my mind running nearly at full speed.
Mary Jane and I have been married for 47 years, ( we were married between
semesters in my junior year), have 3 wonderful children and 8 grandchildren.
I've had a great professional career, including 16 years at Caltech's JPL
and
19 years at EPRI.
I'm an avid flyfisherman for Steelhead, Trout, and many
salt water species such as Tarpon, Mahi Mahi, etc. Also, play some golf
and enjoy the arts, when we can.
We were at Notre Dame in August of this
year and I wear my RETURN TO GLORY teeshirt every Saturday that ND has a
game.
I am a strrong supporter of Tyrone and think ND really showed some
CLASS in hiring a Black American coach. Most of my family and I will be
attending the USC game in the Coliseum to root the IRISH on. I saw my first
ND game, at Rockne Stadium when I was 5 or 6 i.e. in 1939 or 1940. I've been
a diehard fan ever since. About had a heart. Please pass on my regards to
Bud Toepp, Jerry Spaeth, Dick St. John, and many others; Dick St. John was
my Best Man, when I was married in Feb. 1955. He was a very successful
patent attorney in Spokane, Wash., until he retired a year or so, ago. We
went up to see him and his wife, Pat, in Sept. of 2001. They're both doing
well. They have a big family, including 3 (I think), adopted children.
I
have seen Don Thompson, while running thru airports, all over the country,
and saw Marty Kyle and Bud Toepp in Chicago, probably 10 years ago. That's
about it since we left L.A. in 1972.

lastly the F117.
Really a great time to look back on...
Much excitement!! Irene and I have four daughters and a

Oldest son Joe, '85 and his wife Twila 'SMC 85, remain in Dallas with Joe3, Matt, Twila Jr, and Peter Morgan.
Peter Morgan is waging a successful (prayers are in order) battle with a tumor at the base of the pituitary. Peter needs to stay close to Dallas Children's Hospital where three years
ago, I noted the name of Henry Neuhoff on the wall in brass.
I always wanted to, but didn't, write Henry a note thanking him for the good work he did in Chem Engineering, that enabled him to become a business tycoon and benefactor of the Children's Hospital. Thank you Henry.
Also in Saranac will be my younger Brothers Jim and John, both ND grads at some time in their lives. John brings along wife Dianne, son Johnny Class of 2004 and Daughter Molly.
There will be another 50 or 60 Mulflurs in Saranac, some with different surnames. Janet and I are looking forward to the good time that will be had by all.

My Comments : I am still devising ways to take my ideas from Psychology (from my doctoral studies) and Theology (a result of my ministerial years) to the corporate and business worlds.
Lately I have been able to interest several law firms in my work in the areas of "Business, Wisdom and Corporate Culture.
Much of my seminar and consulting work rests on the simple premise that nothing we do (particularly in one's role of leader - be it as a CEO, manager or parent) is neutral. We all share the same moral space as well as the same geographical space. We are all bound by the same laws of God and nature, and our own nature determines the limits of our freedom and the arena of our responsibility. So human life is never neutral. It is an arena of mutuality. We are bound to one another by (as Dr. Jonas Salk put it) the very air we breathe and the God-given nature which we receive at birth.
The problem is, of course, to get these ideas out to the decision-makers, and this means I face the constant challenge of marketing both my ideas and myself. This can be (as everyone in business knows) a distasteful but necessary part of chasing one's dreams. Marketing is always a tough road for us Idealists. But I love what I do and will keep trying to do it.

My Comments : I'm still free-lance writing (since 1968) through my publishing company, Treehaus Communications, Inc. (founded in 1973).
For ten years now we've focused on the spirituality of childhood, and the influences of childhood on the spirituality of adults.
We just participated in the first international conference on the spirituality of children in Chichester, England, where 130 participants from round the world gathered.
Anyone interested, contact me by e-mail. Or, visit our website: www.treehaus1.com.
You'll find some resources there and meet a delightful creature: GLORIA The Christmas Angel -- a new children's book for you and your children's children.
She brings smiles to frown-fixed faces, including an occasional corpse.
GLORIA is a klutzy angel who believes in herself when no one else does and becomes -- by her default and God's design --
the one who announces the birth of God's Son.
A surprise ending awakens a sense of GLORIA's presence each Christmas when she returns, bringing hope to the child (or adult) who
feels put down and left out. Painted on silk, the vivid, whimsical images move in a soft, etherial setting. You'll find her flying this way and that at Barns&Noble and on our website.
Or you an get her attention through my e-mail.
End of news break. We return now to our usual broadcasting.

My Comments : As everybody who comes to this website knows, I spend too much of my time writing light verse (ask my wife, Mary).
It has become my passion, my favorite venues being speaking engagements (anybody want to hire me?).
I try to walk five miles/day and go to the retiree's mass (9 AM) at our parish.
I play some golf (poorly), tennis (poorly), and I bowl (not
too badly).
Mary and I do day trips mostly, but last year we took an Alaska cruise (but not far enough north to see Jerry Wade).
I cook some, especially grilling in the good weather. We're both in fine health, thank God.

THANKS TO ALL 56'ers
Had trouble getting into Guest Book to thank all for prayers and support during wife Marilyn's long cancer battle.
All through my wife Marilyn's long illness at Mayo Clinic from
Dec. 98 to her death on May 29, you were my 'rock'.
A day did not pass without a card, call, FAX or the like, providing prayer support and strength for US to go on one more day.
We soon realized that each one was a GIFT and are thankful for all of them.
Marilyn, one of the charter members of the Cancer Support Group back in 1993, was surely aware of the courage she derived from your caring and Faith.
We thank you all and continue to pray for all who suffer this day.
Our Lady knows our needs and intercedes on our behalf for strength to accept Her Son's Will.
Thought for the day....(author unknown)
Most of us miss out on life's big prizes...the Pulitzer, Nobel,
Oscar, Tony, Emmy...but we're all eligible for the real
Pleasures...
a pat on the back....a kiss behind the ear....a four-pound
bass....a full moon....an empty parking space....a crackling fire....a great
meal....a glorious sunset....hot soup....cold beer.....enjoy the tiny
delights....they're for all of us...

My Comments : Fellow '56er
I came to the ND site to check on the football schedule and, as usual, did a little wandering around.
Currently, I am a beta tester for our local cable provider, Cox, in testing their yet to be launched (in our area) internet cable connection. Not a paid pastime, just lucky to be asked. It's good for them because I teach a weekly class in our local library "Introduction to the Internet" and can honestly give the system a good recommendation.
But travel is our fun thing - off to Boulder, CO to do some minding of grandsons, then to France for touring of Normandy, Brittany and the wine country around Bordeaux, all on our own, then a week of hiking in the Dordogne area.
Karl and Terry Martersteck will join us for the hiking.
In the summer we have rented places in Jackson Hole for a family vacation, 17 of us, and in the fall we will travel to China, Tibet and Southeast Asia.
That's enough, great to have found the page!!
